Catastrophe!

I’ve got some bad news:  The site crashed.  Hard.

But, there’s some good news, as well!  Now I’ve got a clean slate to do the upgrades I’ve been wanting.

So, here’s the plan:

1.  Re-Upload all of the comic pages, starting with Issue ONE.

2.  Re-Upload all of the character biographies — as many as I can find, at least.  Some were written directly into the site, so…  I’l do my best, but for those few of you that have the entire thing memorized, I’m sure there will be a few differences.

3.  Rebuild the side bars and links — which is really a good thing.  The previous sidebars had some technical issues that weren’t worth redoing at the time, but now that it’s forced there’s no excuse.

4.  Repopulate all of the Extras/About/Creator Pages.

For those who also read The Guard, don’t worry, it’s safe.  The hit affected only SOLDIERS.

If you want to know what happened, it was a save error.  I was adjusting a piece of code to fix a discrepancy with WP 3.1 and the .php file scrambled when I hit “save”.  This happens occasionally with Windows computers — can’t say why — it just happened at the worst possible time tonight.  A freak accident, I suppose.  Lessons to take away from this:  One, always code in Linux.  Two, make sure your backup is really backed up (I saved the files, but not the logic behind them, resulting in irretrievable data).  Three, don’t do live coding, even when its a small adjustment (I should have taken the file offline, made the change, then uploaded).  And, Four, don’t code tired…

Hopefully we’ll be back up quickly and the site will be better, faster, and smoother than ever before.

Will you be able to save Issue 0 and the Interlude? Margaret’s blog and watching her learn or almost learn a lot of what was going on through her daily thoughts was what got me hooked on this. There was a lot of info that got revealed in there in a unique way. *crosses fingers*

I’ve got Zero. I’ve got most of Interlude. The problem is I don’t have the last Maga Blog entry and I’m trying desperately to find it. That last entry I completely wrote on the spot in WordPress — and I don’t have any other copies. And, incredibly, I have a full cache backup of everything except Interlude — how weird is that?

So, for any of our readers — if you swiped a copy of Interlude off of the website, If you agree to send me the last page of Maga’s Blog entries (or all of the blog entries, just to be sure), I will forgive you. Hell, I’ll thank you!

a little late, but why don’t you perform a rollback from your backup?

How goes your rebuild? Hoping all is well.

      Al,

The rebuild is going OK — decided to completely overhaul the Theme, so it’s a little more than a rebuild. I’m currently formatting Zero and Interlude for upload to Kindle and Nook, also working on an iPad/iPhone app. It would go quicker, except I have to completely re-letter Zero.

On the flip side, Francis and I are crazy busy with day jobs and that’s slowed everything down. So is Roland, the artist on The Guard, so it hasn’t updated either. Hopefully everything will relent soon and we can get back to normal!

Sorry for the delay, guys. This short hiatus turned out to be a lot more than we planned!

    Hello Gentlemen,

    Hope all is well.

You guys have been off line for over a year. Hope this doesn’t mean the frustrations of the rebuild, etc did you in. I keep checking back in periodically, hoping to find you have restarted. I’m not going to try promoting with votes until i see you are back. I don’t want to bring other readers in, just to frustrate them.

Soldiers started off with the elements I look for, a good story that involves with plenty of room for development, good art. Do let us know what the situation is, and the likelihood of a return or reboot. Whatever you do, I wish you well. Thanks for your efforts.
